2108 State of Ohio Elementary School Championship

February 25, 2018

The future for The CCL Chess School looks just as bright as the current and the past.  The Elementary School Championship (K-6) was a 2-way tie for 1st place between CCLians Varun Sathyajeeth and Michael Lin.  Varun and Michael won all their games, excepting drawing against each other, finishing the tournament with a 4.5 score.

Aryan g45 Champion

CCLian Aryan Balyan, who is only in 8th grade, came in sole 1st place in the State of Ohio G/45 championship held last December 26th.  It is very unusual for such a young player to win an open/adult state championship.

Sneha Prabu and Matt Wang came in a 2-way tie for 1st place in the U-1600 section while Naga Sankula came in 2nd place in the U-1200 section.

The CCL Wins Most of the Grades at the Ohio Grade Levels

November 19, 2017

Despite many students from the CCL School not showing up for this event, we managed to win 7 or the 13 sections.  The ‘I can’t believe it’ of the tournament was when Joe Kleban, who only played in 2 tournament games in the last 2 years, came in clear 1st in the 10th grade division. Although we had many top 5 finishes, I am only going to list our Grade Level Champions below. Complete results are at http://www.neilley.com/chess/results/2017glresults.pdf.

  • Grade 12 – Jasen Lai; sole champion
  • Grade 10 – Joe Kleban; sole champion
  • Grade 9 – Justin Storn; sole champion
  • Grade 7 – Karthik Kallam and Lainie Massick; co-champions
  • Grade 6 – Atharva Sapre; sole champion
  • Grade 5 – Dae San Kim; sole champion
